Apple Tree Co-op 43 ( "Juliet")

详细技术说明
Researchers at the University of Illinois have developed a highly productive late-season red apple tree.
*Abstract

Researchers at the University of Illinois have developed a highly productive late-season red apple tree. Resistant to apple scab disease, the tree produces apples of exceptional "Juliet". Co-op 43 is the 15th apple cultivar developed by the cooperative breeding program between the University of Illinois, Purdue University, and Rutgers University.

DESCRIPTION/DETAILS

This technology is a new and distinct cultivar of apple tree named Co-op 43 (Malus xdomestica Borkh). Co-op 43 is a moderately vigorous, spreading, semi-spur apple tree. This annual-cropping tree produces fruit of exceptional quality with a very good storage life.

The original seedling was produced in 1970 after researchers at the University of Illinois bred PRI-1018 as the seed parent with 'Viking' as the pollen parent. The result of this pollination was a seedling carrying the progeny designation PRI 2597-103 in breeding records. PRI 2597-103 was released for testing under the name Co-op 43.

Co-op 43 carries the Vf gene inherited from Malus floribunda clone 821. This gene provides a high level of resistance to apple scab disease incited by the fungal pathogen (Venturia inaequalis). Co-op 43 also shows resistance to powdery mildew and fire blight. Co-op 43 also shows reduced susceptibility to Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae, the fungal pathogen that incites cedar apple rust.

Co-op 43 produces late-season red apples that ripen approximately two weeks after "Red Delicious." Its crops are heavy, with three-year-old trees yielding 21 kg of fruit annually. Fruit does not fall off branches unless it is ripe. Medium red striped with a yellow-green background at harvest, these apples have a full-flavored, slightly acidic, sweet taste. Apples are round-oblate with an average diameter of 64-76 mm. They have a very long storage life, maintaining firmness, texture, and flavor for nine months to one year when refrigerated at 1 degreeCelsius. Co-op 43 apples can be used as dessert apples as well as for cooking.

BENEFITS

  • Resistant to disease: Contains the Vf gene which provides resistance to apple scab. Also shows resistance to powdery mildew and fire blight
  • Environmentally Safer: Requires less chemical sprays than other apple trees
  • Marketable: Ripens two weeks after "Red Delicious" in late fall
