- Hydroxideexchange membranes (HEMs) are important polymer electrolytes forelectrochemical energy conversion devices such as fuel cells, electrolyzers,solar hydrogen generators, redox flow batteries, desalination, and metal-airbatteries. The cationic functional group is the key part of HEMs, controllingfundamental properties such as conductivity, solubility, and stability. Thisinvention describes an ultra-stable phosphonium cation and polymer hydroxideexchange membranes/ionomers based on this cation. The phosphonium cationcontains three side groups, each consisting of a benzene ring with three methylsubstitutions.
