- *Abstract
-
Northwestern scientists have developed an innovative method for detection of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cardiac tissue affected by atrial fibrillation. AF is a common heart rhythm disorder that can contribute to many more serious heart conditions. Its etiology is very complex, which presents a problem for clinicians attempting to diagnose and treat it. Prof. Arora's lab has been investigating mechanisms underlying AF for many years with the aim of improving clinical decision-making and, ultimately, patient outcomes. Their recent research efforts have led to a method for determining whether to pursue cardiac tissue ablation as a treatment for AF based on whether the disease is caused by ROS or not. Many AF patients could benefit from implementation of this new technology in the clinical setting. At the same time, this invention enables further research efforts in the field of AF that could bring forth many other treatment options for this disorder.
