Market Opportunities

In the United States alone there are around 2500 people a year that undergoheart transplants. Current practice is to match a patient with a donor ofsimilar health status to aim for successful organ acceptance. A risk scoringsystem is  used to determine how apatient gets matched with a possible donor. These scoring systems have beenutilized over the past several years as a partial solution to findingsuccessful transplant matches. However, these systems are problematic becausethere is a notable margin of error due to a lack of health information from bothdonor and receiver. Additionally, there is no such scoring system that has beencommercialized as a mobile health care technology. This situation has inspired researchersat the University of Louisville to address these problems. It is hoped that withan improved application there will be a direct positive influence of the midand long term survival of patients undergoing heart transplants.

Technology

The University of Louisville has a team of researchers working to betterimprove the risk scoring system currently used for determining heart transplantrisk factors. This technology uses data that quantifies both donor andrecipient risk factors and calculates this into a dependable application. Theaim is for this technology to be mobile which will allow for health careproviders (physicians, nurses, etc.) to have readily available information on patient’sbackground and health status. In addition to improving current techniques, thistechnology will aim to decrease the margin of error between donor/recipientmatches. The goal of this technology is that the overall transplant matchingprocedure will become more effective and more personalized resulting in adecrease in morbidity and post-transplant complications.
