Concaved-Dome Structure with Impedance for Perfect Broadband Antireflection

*Abstract

The invention addresses the fundamental issue of photon energy loss at the interface of two materials with different refractive indices.

In particular, the patented submicron concaved-dome structure addresses the fundamental challenge of solar spectrum reflection at the surface of solar cell devices. With the optimal refractive index matching profile, the invented structure outperforms the existing antireflection approaches such as antireflection coating, surface roughness, moth's eye structure, or other nanoscale structures. The concaved-dome structure potentially will lead to close to zero photon energy loss at the interface over a broadband solar spectrum. This approach is built on the theoretical analytic solution and is fundamentally different from the traditional approach using the trial-and-error procedure to find an optimal antireflection structure.

Furthermore, the invented concaved-dome structure and the design approach is transformative as it is applicable to other types of optoelectronic devices including light-emitting diodes (LEDs), organic LEDs, semiconductor lasers, photo-detectors, displays, as well as sensors.
