- *Abstract
-
Dr. Gerhard Welsch and his colleagues at the Institute for Materials Research at DLR, the German Aerospace Center, have co-developed new production processes for a range of titanium and titanium alloy composites. The technology provides for titanium aluminide alloy composite materials with reinforcing crystal-oriented titanium or a titanium alloy phase. The unique production processes provide fine-grained and fine-fibered microstructures in a controlled manner, to produce oriented crystal structures and improved mechanical properties. Resulting materials possess high elastic modulus and higher strength and ductility than other titanium intermetallics. The technology is particularly well-suited for power-generating turbines, aerospace and automotive engine applications.Patent Application 12/849,324 was published as US 2011/0262667 on October 27, 2011, titled "Composite Material and Production Processes." In addition, a German patent application DE 10 2009 039 344 was published on January 12, 2012 (Appl. 10 2009 039344.7 filed 28-August, 2009.)
