*Abstract
The present invention provides for compositions and methods for various real-time extraction algorithms used to decode the instantaneous firing rates from cells in the motor cortex associated with brain signals generated by a subject's thoughts to move an object. Additional claims recite directional tuning of the brain-machine interface for each preferred direction in four dimensions during training and calibration for a particular task such as self-feeding. The novel iterative, mixed mode training and calibration results in the subject controlling the exact path and speed of the prosthesis to achieve the correct approach and precise direction to grasp and retrieve an object. Additional embodiments provide for more degrees of control because the level of involvement of the subject in calibrating the device increases through the calibration steps. Applications:1) For use by people with paralysis, who do not have the use of their limbs2) Direct, real-time, 3-D control of prosthetic devices3) Facilitates the ability of paralysed individuals to convert their motor intentions into purposeful communication and interactionAdvantages:1) Training and calibration of the prosthetic movement is iterative and allows for smooth, real-time 3-diminsional control 2) Neurotechnology provides ability to perform tasks at a higher level of difficulty as compared to virtual cursor-control movements3) Allows the subject to attempt and complete many different tasks in the course of everyday life4) The training, calibration, and extraction algorithms capture how the body tells the brain where its limbs are positioned in space5) Invention does not disrupt eye control or other motor functions6) As a subject uses the neuroprosthetic device subject improves control of the device and other control signals can be created based only on the patient's intentionsStage of Development:Video of monkeys controlling the prosthetic arm for self feeding are available.
