*Abstract

Makes Networks Faster and More Secure

This joint FoUntain coding and Network (FUN) coding system increases data throughput and decreases transmission delay along a data link. FUN is a forward error correction method that combines features of fountain coding, intra-session network coding, and cross-next-hop network coding. Ultimately, the design prevents packet information loss that occurs in traditional lossy networks, such as 3G and 4G networks, making the network significantly faster and more secure. With available coding systems, as the number of data transfers or data hops between data links increase, packet information loss also increases. University of Florida researchers have creating a joint coding system that significantly increases data throughput and information spreading over multi-hop lossy networks, thereby increasing the speed of the network, increasing revenue of network service providers, and providing a more secure network environment. This network coding can be applied to 5G wireless networks, cellular phone networks, Wi-Fi networks, and software security systems.

Application

Network coding for increasing data throughput, speed and security

Advantages

  • Achieves significantly higher throughput than 3G and 4G wireless networks, increasing revenue of network service providers
  • Allows for forward error correction of packets, decreasing network data loss and securing information
  • Minimizes transmission delay between source nodes and sink nodes, increasing network speed

Technology

Joint FoUntain coding and Network coding (FUN) boosts information spreading over multi-hop lossy networks. The FUN approach combines the best features of fountain coding, digital signal coding, intra-session network coding, and cross-next-hop network coding and is used between each transmission along a data link, increasing throughput and decreasing delay transmission. The FUN coding system flows between a source node to a sink node through relay nodes. Results show that in multi-hop networks, FUN coding yielded optimal throughput and performed significantly better than traditional fountain codes and existing network coding schemes.
