Computer Grid for the "Virtual Screening" of Protein Targets (09047)

*Abstract

Features and Benefits

  • Powerful computer grid is a valuable resource for screening vast libraries of molecular compound data to identify novel cancer therapies.
  • Computing grid creates supercomputer power to shorten the time for screening compound candidates from years to days.

Technology

Through a partnership with the Kentucky Dataseam Initiative, a non-profit organization that harnesses unused computing power in over 50 school districts across Kentucky, researchers at the University of Louisville have created a powerful "supercomputer" grid across the state that is used to screen vast libraries of potential compounds to identify novel cancer therapies. The combined power of the computers greatly enhances drug discovery programs at UofL and at collaborating institutions. With UofL's computing grid technology, it is possible to screen millions of potential compounds against a cancer target in a matter of days.

Markets Addressed

This technology can be used as a more time efficient alternative for the creation of new anticancer drugs. Using this technology, there have been over 20 successful screenings of cancer targets that are now moving into laboratories for anticancer activity testing. This technology can aid researchers in identifying molecules that attack cancer targets exclusively, which can greatly reduce the toxicity of drug therapies.

Technology Status

  • IP Status: Research Computing Tool
  • Fields of Use Available: Potential academic and commercial collaborations for the screening of compounds.
