Technology
Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) has the highest volume production of any synthetic rubber and is used extensively in automobile tires and tire related products.
Existing options for recycling SBR are limited due to the vulcanization process, which crosslinks polymer chains of the rubber with sulfur. Because this makes tires more durable and harder to break down, used ones currently can only be reused — chopped up and added to other products — rather than recycled.
To fill this need, UofL researchers have developed a novel method for degradation and recycling of SBR.
They have demonstrated that when finely ground SBR reacts with a monochloramine solution, the SBR becomes resin-like, thereby losing its cross-linking properties and degrading it to the unvulcanized base SBR polymer.
Returning the SBR to its unvulcanized form allows it to be processed at the microscopic level and allows it to be recycled into new products.
