Osteoporotic Fracture Risk Assessment Tool Based on Bone Structural Imaging and Clinical Factors

詳細技術說明
Researchersat the University of Iowa, in collaboration with New York University, havedeveloped a software to improve osteoporotic diagnostics and fracture riskassessments. The purpose of this technology is to minimize the current publichealth problem of osteoporosis underdiagnoses. Theproposed software cross-analyzes an individual’s age, body mass index, race, gender, and medical history with three-dimensional images of their bone via MRIor CT scan. This method is a more comprehensive and accurate assessment of anindividual’s risk of osteoporotic fracture, which can help doctors andspecialists prescribe the correct medicine and treatment.
*Abstract

Background Information

Osteoporosis, a disease of the bone makingindividuals more susceptible to fracture, currently affects over 50 millionAmericans. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, the diseasecauses more than 8.9 million fractures annually, meaning that one osteoporoticfracture occurs roughly every three seconds. These fractures cost the UShealthcare system an estimated $17 billion per year. The growing number of fracturesis due, in part, to the amount of individuals with osteoporosis that remainundiagnosed and untreated. The current medical technology most commonly used todiagnose osteoporosis and assess an individual’s risk of fracture is over 50years old and relies entirely on two-dimensional bone imaging. This method failsto detect the majority of individuals with osteoporosis who need treatment and,as a result, these individuals are at a higher risk for fracture.

Advantages

·        Achievesa more accurate assessment of an individual’s risk of osteoporotic fracture

·        Utilizesthree-dimensional imaging for a more accurate assessment of bone density

·        Incorporatesclinical factors, such as age, race, and gender, into the diagnostic software

·        Reducesthe probability of underdiagnosing osteoporosis
