Rapid Measurement of Liquid-Surface Interactions Based on Moving Contact Line Mobility

詳細技術說明
We have developed a rapid and reproducible high speed imagingtechnique enabling the characterization the mobility of a moving contact line basedon droplet morphology, speed, displacement, and static and dynamic contactangles. These parameters are representative of how fast and easily a liquid canwet or be removed from a surface.
*Abstract

Measurements of liquid interactions with surfaces are often describedby their static contact angle. Static contactangle is an equilibrium based measurement and is often not sufficient to fully explainspreading or movement of liquids across surfaces in industrial, manufacturingor in real-world settings, especially for fast movements.

We have developed a rapid and reproducible high speed imagingtechnique enabling the measurement of the contact line mobility parameter, a parametercorrelated with the dynamics involved in a liquid spreading or moving across asurface. This parameter is based oncompeting physical forces: capillary forces that promote sticking to the solidsurface and inertial forces which act to displace the liquid across thesurface.

Our technique enables industry and researchers to gain adeeper understanding of the practical impact of changes in liquid formulationsor surface modifications. Our methodoffers a rapid way to quantify the interactions of surfaces with liquids, includingpure liquids or formulations containing surfactants, suspensions or mixtures ofliquids. This is broadly applicable to analysis or testing for lithography,ink-jet formulas, additives, forensics, paint, ink and dye industries ortesting various surface coatings.

Potential Applications

  • Analysis of liquids including:
    Ink-jet inks and other suspensions
    Water and oil based additives
    Lithography solutions
    Surfactants
  • Analysis of surfaces including:
    Metals, plastics and other non-absorbents
    Paper, gels and other absorbents
    Hydrophobic, super-hydrophobic and otherpartially-wetting substrates

Advantages

  • Rapid test method: Data collection completed in a matter ofseconds
  • Repeatable and reproducible results
  • Applicable to a broad range of liquids and substrates
  • Suitable for Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids
