*Abstract
Underpotential deposited (UPD) Cu on polycrystalline Au electrodes in aqueous HClO4 has been found to catalyze the reduction of purified selenate, SeO4, to yield a layer of adsorbed Cu selenide, CuxSe. Subsequent oxidation of this layer led to the loss of Cu, leaving behind a monolayer of adsorbed, elemental Se, which could be further oxidized to selenite, SeO3, at more positive potentials. Evidence that SeO4 adsorbs on Au(poly) in this electrolyte over the wide potential range was obtained from differential reflectance spectroscopy. Lastly, the voltammetric features observed on Au in Cu2+ free 0.1 M HClO4 containing SeO4 prepared from commercial Na2SeO4 could be attributed to the reduction of SeO3 present as an impurity in the as received salt.Implementation of this AC methodology in the presence of dispersed titania particles will make it in principle possible to remove both SeO4 and SeO3 from aqueous acidic solutions. This method can detect both selenite and selenate individually, but the process can also be adapted to mixed solutions of selenate and selenite.
