Given the connection between emotion, mood, and both physical and mental health, as well as the prevalence and costs of adverse consequences tied to emotional problems, research on the development, maintenance, and treatment of problematic emotional states is critical for individuals and society at large. Ambulatory assessment (AA) using modern wearable and mobile computing technologies open a door to perform large-scale real-life emotion studies. However, the difficulty of easily and cheaply creating a customized mobile app and supporting system to collect ambulatory data prevents wide-spread adoption of AA. The primary goal of this software is to address the challenge of efficient AA system deployment and data analysis in emotion and psychology studies by developing a system that enables a researcher to easily create his/her own iOS or Android mobile app targeted for a particular emotion study, deploy the app to participants to collect ambulatory data, and generate useful data analytic results based on real-life data. Specific objectives include a) the development of Mood ToolKit software that supports efficient mobile-app customization, integrative ambulatory data collection, and deep data analytics for large-scale data-driven emotion research; and b) a large-scale emotion study based on real-life data collected and analyzed using Mood ToolKit to show the effectiveness of Mood ToolKit and generate new analytic results to test theories of emotion, in particular the psychological constructionist perspective, and to demonstrate the importance of studying emotional processes in daily life. Mood ToolKit has the potential to revolutionize how AA is deployed and fulfilled in a wide-range of emotion and psychological research. It could provide a wealth of data and insights that can inform and test major theories of emotion research and enable in-depth examination of the dynamics and context of emotion, its precursors, and its consequences in the daily lives of participants.CONTACT INFO: Office of Technology Management & Industry Relations Brett Maland, J.D.
