Pulsatile Flow ECMO Machine for Better Transportability

詳細技術說明
Technology SummaryProfs. Albert Ratnerand Jay Bhama have developed a new method of flow through an ECMO that wouldoptimize the flow rate, substantially decreasing the time for each procedure. Theydiscovered the flux through the tube increased when using pulsatile flowinstead of a steady state flow. This method allows for faster procedure timessince the energy loss is minimized, while the fluid accelerates to an idealrate, and thus less tubing is needed. This method allows for smaller andlighter ECMOs, becauseAdvantagesLight and compactECMO designs that are easily transportablePotential as animplantable artificial lungSmaller design allows for use outside ofhospitals

Background Information

Global ECMO market from 2016 to 2021 is expectedto expand from $247 million to $305 million. ECMO machines are used fortreatment of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, with an increase indemand as a bridge to heat and lung transplantation. Current technology circulatesblood from the body and oxygenates it before pumping the blood back intocirculation. The ECMO machine is used on veins and/or arteries depending on theconditions of the patient. Flow through the machine is currently limited by theproperties of the tubing materials, and therefore the rate is lower than optimal.
