Carbon-supported IrPdRu Hydrogen Oxidation/Evolution Catalysts

詳細技術說明
Novel carbon-supported IrPdRumetallic alloy nanoparticles were developed as active hydrogen oxidation andevolution catalysts for use in alkaline media.
*Abstract

Hydrogen oxidation/evolutionreaction (HOR/HER) are among the core processes for notable clean energytechnologies such as fuel cells and electrolyzers for hydrogen fuelproduction. However, the performance(i.e. efficiency, power density) of these applications are limited by thereaction kinetics of HOR and HER, necessitating active electrode catalystmaterials. Current benchmark catalystsfor HOR/HER, such as platinum (Pt) and iridium (Ir), are highly expensive intheir pure form due to their natural scarcity.

This invention identifies a unique series of lowercost ternary IrPdRu metallic alloys as a stable and active catalysts for HORand HER in alkaline media. Among thisseries, Ir3Ru7 and Ir3Pd1Ru6(shown in red and blue in the figure below) demonstrate greater catalyticactivities than pure Pt or Ir on carbon, as evidenced by the left shift in thecurrent-potential curve which is indicative of greater HOR activity. Moreover, the combination of Ir with Pd and/orRu not only enhances the activity but has the added benefit of reducing theoverall material cost compared to pure Ir or Pt.

Low temperature fuel cells are one of the principleapplications for this invention. Theadvent of high performance, but less expensive alkaline electrolyte materialshas opened opportunities for development of alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) that arecompetitive with proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Our alternative IrPdRu based catalyst systemshelps offset the lower catalytic activity of Pt and Ir under alkalineconditions.
