- Inventionuses variants of butylcholinesterase that have enhanced catalytic efficiencyfor (-)-cocaine in order to lower blood concentrations of cocaine. Thecatalytic activity of these variant enzymes are orders-of-magnitude highercompared to wildtype BChE and can more efficiently clear (-)-cocaine, which hasa much longer half-life compared to (+)-cocaine, from the blood.
