Hair Follicle Stem Cell Activation & Hair Growth by Metabolic Regulators

技術優勢
Topical applicationHigh quality new hair: commercially available treatments produce short, fuzzy hairs that are not like the patients’ typical hair
技術應用
Promote hair growthReduce balding
詳細技術說明
The Lowry group at UCLA has discovered that topical application of a small molecule accelerates the hair cycle and combats hair loss. This drug works by promoting glycolysis in hair follicle stem cells. No other hair loss treatment acts on hair follicle metabolism to promote the hair cycle, and the inventors are the first to show that the activation of hair follicle stem cells is dependent on the production of lactate (a product of glycolysis).

State Of Development

  • Topical application of the small molecule has been tested in mice and showed a significant increase in hair growth as early as 3-5 days after treatment
  • Histology analysis confirmed that hair cycle induction by the small molecule was normal in appearance
  • Research has been completed to understand the mechanism of action

Background

Hair loss is a common, often undesirable symptom of aging. Commercially available products that combat hair thinning or balding have variable efficacy among users. Further, the targets of these products are either unknown or alter hormonal pathways, which may have undesirable side effects. A hair loss remedy that has a higher success rate than current treatments and minimal side effects would greatly increase consumer satisfaction with and usage of hair loss treatments.
