-
A novel artificial hip joint wasdesigned that enables reduced friction and wear, resulting in a healthier,longer-lasting replacement joint. Elastic elements and a non-spherical cupsurface are incorporated in the design to exploit 'squeeze-film' action. Anorder of magnitude improvement in film thickness and reduction in lubricantfilm pressure compared with conventional designs are the result. Optimalsqueeze-film bearing performance during the stance-phase portion of the gait cycleis accomplished through the ellipsoidal cup geometry. Furthermore, computational analysis predicts that the cavitation region developed during theswing-phase portion of the gait cycle does refill with synovial fluid underplausible ball and cup separation velocities.
Potential Application: Prosthetic total hip replacement joints
Advantages:
- Reduced wear due to thicker film and lower, more evenly distributed film pressure
- More durable design eliminates wear particles prevalent with alternative designs and materials
