- *Abstract
-
The invention provides a system and method for continuous casting of molten material, and also for coating a product with a molten material on a single-wheel casting machine. The core of this invention is an apparatus and technique for continuously 'writing' and 'erasing' features onto the casting surface allowing manufacturers to manipulate the form of the final product in real time. This method can be used to manufacture a variety of products with thickness dimensions currently not feasible in commercial casting. While reducing the number of processing steps, the cost of manufacturing equipment, and energy consumption, this invention will yield significant increases in productivity when compared to prior manufacturing techniques.
Potential Applications
- High-speed (throughput) casting of high-quality flat products
- Thin metal sheet, ribbon, and foil manufacturing
- Product coating with molten material; thickness of 0.1 mm possible
Advantages
- Continuous process
- Ability to modify product specification in 'real time'
- Increased productivity
- Reduced scrap, cost, energy requirements, and CO2 emissions
