Development of Transgenic Zebra Fish as Biosensors for Enviornmental Carcinogens

詳細技術說明
The zebra fish has become a biological animal model that is complementary to the more traditional mouse model
*Abstract

The zebra fish has become a biological animal model that is complementary to the more traditional mouse model. The transgenic oncomouse, which expresses the oncogene V-Ras, is an excellent model for the characterization of carcinogenic chemicals because it is carries an oncogene and is waiting for the correct stimuli to induce tumor formation. Here, researchers have generated transgenic zebra fish, that express a retroviral cyclin gene (Orf A) derived from an oncogenic retrovirus of walleye fish. Five independent Zebra Fish lines have been developed. They will be useful in determining is Orf A expression will predispose zebra fish to developing tumors.

Applications:

  • This predisposition to tumor formation would make these fish extremely valuable for use as a biosensor. For example, these fish could be used in waterways as a means of determining the presence of carcinogens contained in their environment.
  • These "oncofish" can also be used as the oncomouse is currently being used to study tumorigenesis and the mechanisms of tumor development, including the pharmacological effect of anticancer agents.
