Dr. Goldman's team discovered that a small percentage of cells found in the subcortical white matter are neural progenitor cells (Cornell docket D-3221). More recently, by performing microarray analysis of adult human subcortical white matter, followed by confirmatory real-time RT-PCR analysis, his team identified the autocrine signals and receptors by which these cells maintain their multipotential and mitotically-competent state. As such, these molecules provide targets for developing drugs to prevent or promote in situ endogenous neurogenesis, or to manipulate cells in vitro.

 

The key receptor-ligand pair is receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase zeta /beta and pleiotrophin. Also, certain cell adhesion molecules known to associate with RPTP zeta/beta , namely, Nr-cam, L1/NgCam, are upregulated as well. Finally, the invention teaches that inhibitors of sterol synthesis, such as statins, drives differentiation in this population of cells.
