Thistechnology introduces the only currently known method to synthesize end-functionalizedisotactic polyethers, including telechelic diols, from racemic epoxidesby using a bimetallic catalyst and alcohol as chain transfer agent.
*Abstract

Unlike atactic polymer that isamorphous and has less commercial value, isotactic polymer is semi-crystallineand offers superior mechanical characteristics. Currently there is no practicalroute to isotactic polyether.

 

Geoffrey Coates' group hasdeveloped novel routes to fabricate telechelic, isotactic polyethers that usealcohols as chain transfer agents with a bimetallic catalyst. This system can synthesize both enantiopure andracemic end-functionalized polyethers from racemic epoxides stereoblockpolymers.

PotentialApplications

The polyethers synthetized can beused in materials, such as polyurethanes, elastomers, thermoset plastics, andthermoplastics, and as non-ionic surfactants. Particularly, telechelic diols are an importantcomponent of polyurethanes, which are widely used in:

  • Flexiblefoam seating
  • Rigidfoam insulation panels
  • Microcellularfoam seals and gaskets
  • Wheelsand tires
  • Automotivesuspension brushings
  • Electricalpotting compounds
  • Surfacecoatings and sealants
  • High-performanceadhesives
  • Carpetunderlay
  • Hardplastic parts, such as for electronic instruments.

  • Fabricationof end-functionalized polymers with multiple types of functionalities andmicrostructure
  • Norequirement to use enantiomerically pure monomers, which are expensive
  • Thediols produced by this method are highly isotactic.
