Anti-Biofouling Coatings

詳細技術說明: University researchers have developed coating materials with desirable biofouling mitigating characteristics. Proof of concept has been obtained for certain aspects and embodiments of the invention and the technology continues to be developed.

*Abstract: Marine biofouling is a well known problem involving unwanted accumulation of barnacles, mussels, star fish, clams, tube worms, algae and various types of plants on submerged structures including navy and civilian ship hulls. The biofouling species often release adhesive materials to attach themselves to ship bottom hulls. The accumulation of biofoulers can become fairly thick, causes an increased surface drag on ships, which can lead to a substantial waste of energy, as much as ~40% increase in fuel consumption and decrease in cruising speed.
