*Abstract
LIGHT SENSITIVITY METERA Novel Device to Quantitatively Measure Light SensitivityLight Hypersensitivity is commonly associated with excessive use of or poorly fitting contact lenses; various eye diseases, injuries and infections; and several medications used to treat medical conditions unrelated to the eye, such as ADHD. Light Hypersensitivity is characterized by pain, tearing, reflexive squinting and/or photophobia in response to increases in illumination. It is often experienced with exposure to sunlight, but sometimes in response to small changes in illumination such as turning on room lights or even a computer monitor. In the most serious cases, a person may have to avoid lighted spaces altogether.Researchers at the University of Missouri-St. Louis have developed the Light Sensitivity Meter (LSM), a novel device to quantitatively measure light sensitivity. By delivering light of either a constant or an increasing intensity over time, the LSM allows optometrists, ophthalmologists and others to monitor the efficacy of treatments over time in patients with Light Hypersensitivity. There currently is no other device that quantifies light sensitivity. Potential Applications--Tracking of interventions over time in patients with Light Hypersensitivity, whether congenital or as a result of injury, medication or disease. --Potential for improved diagnoses of diseases and conditions that cause Light Hypersensitivity.--Development of standard, quantitative levels of light sensitvity to categorize degrees of such sensitivity for use by health professionals and manufacturers of light filtering/blocking materials.--Testing of light filtering/blocking materials for windshields, visors, sunglasses, etc. Benefits--The LSM is the only device that quantifies light sensitivity, making it an exciting addition to vision testing product lines.--The test is easily administered and can be used by those in health care and those in other professions requiring a measure of light sensitivity, greatly expanding the market size and profit potential.DEVELOPMENT STATUS: A prototype has been developed.IP STATUS: U.S. Patent No. 8,083,350REFERENCE NO.: 05UMS001CONTACT: Tamara WilgersDirector of Technology Commercialization & Economic DevelopmentUniversity of Missouri-St. Louis314-516-6884wilgerst@umsl.edu
