*Abstract
Enhancing heterogeneous nucleation by melt treatment optimization was used to develop a process for grain refinement of cast structure in austenitic stainless steel. Thermodynamic models of different melt treatment scenarios were used to predict the sequence of reactions to form the desired precipitates, which could serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites for grain refinement. Superaustenitic stainless steel was cast in a heavy section test articles. Precipitation of the targeted heterogeneous nucleation sites and their effectiveness in grain refinement was confirmed. A refined as-cast structure consisting of an inner fine equiaxed grain structure and outer columnar dendrite zone structure of limited length was achieved in experimental castings. The mechanism for grain refinement is discussed.
