*Abstract
A trailer-mounted self-powered water disinfection system was constructed to provide drinking water under emergency conditions which have resulted in the damage or disablement of the normal drinking water supply.The primary components of the system include an array of photovoltaic panels to generate electrical energy, anultracapacitor to provide robust energy storage, and a certified ultraviolet light system to provide disinfection.Additionally, pretreatment is included to address aesthetic water quality issues and to improve the clarity of theraw water prior to disinfection. The self-contained unit is light enough to be towed by a standard pickup truck andmay be modified to for skid or container mounting. The system has the potential to disinfect a quantity of drinkingwater for more than 1,000 people per day without requiring an external generator or other external powersupplies.
