Pre-formed assemblies of sol-gel derived nanoparticles as 3D scaffolds for composites and aerogels

*Abstract
Composite materials, such as aerogels, are flexible materials which have applications in many different industries including the aerospace, electronics, medical, and structural engineering industries. In order to create composite materials, dopant materials must be added to polymers. Dopant materials, such as sol-gel derived silica, are made up of nanoparticles. These nanoparticles must be added carefully to polymers to ensure even distribution, which can be a difficult and timely process involving the addition of other materials called surfactants. This new technology aids in the even dispersion of dopant nanoparticles in order to avoid agglomeration, or non-uniform dispersion. This technology also eliminates the need of surfactants by adding dopant nanoparticles through dispersion of preformed, 3D assemblies of nanoparticles. These 3D assemblies, or "skeletal structures" of nanoparticles, are coated with polymers at joints and can be made into composites on-site. One benefit of this technology is the more uniform distribution of dopant materials, which improves the physical properties of the composite material produced. Benefits: -Superior method of creating composite materials-Produces uniform composite materials -Higher strength properties of composite materials -Allows composite materials to be created on-site Keywords:-Sol-gel-Nanoparticles-Dopant-Polymers-Composite materials
