Abstract of US Patent Application 20060054655 A1 - Selective Reinforcement of Metallic Bodies: A method of making composite structural components including beams and other structural components involving incorporating a reinforcing segment into a metallic body by, for example, friction stir processing. Non-confidential Abstract of Invention: Metallic beams are used for structural applications to provide support or increase stiffness of large scale structures. Modulus, strength, and weight are primary design criteria for high performance structures. Stiffness is often maximized for minimum weight or maximum strength of the structure. This invention provides a way to obtain synergistic enhancement of stiffness by design and outlines a method to make such metallic structures. It has the potential to bring significant performance enhancement at low cost for high-efficiency structures such as light-weight airframes and automotive chassis. The concept can be extended to producing metallic structural components with added functionality such as magnetic and other desirable properties.
