Abstract of US Patent 6,712,916 - Metal Superplasticity Enhancement and Forming Process: A shaped metallic component is formed by friction stirring at least a segment of a single piece of bulk metal to impart superplasticity thereto and thereby yield a single superplastic metal blank from the single piece of bulk metal. The metal blank is then deformed by a metal deformation process such as forging, rolling, drawing, bending, extruding, gas forming, punching, and stamping.Non-Confidential Abstract of Invention: Superplastic forming is used to produce complex components and unitized structures. The superplastic forming rates in conventionally processed commercial aluminum alloys are quite low, 10^-4-10^-3 s-1. Friction stir processing leads to enhanced superplastic properties of metallic materials. For example, a friction stir processed 7075 Al alloy exhibits superplasticity at strain rates higher than 10^-1s-1. In addition to high strain rate superplastic forming, this method can be used to achieve selective superplastic forming, and thick section superplastic forming. Friction stir processing can also be used to obtain microstructure amenable for superplastic forming in a single step from cast or powder metallurgy material.
