University of MissouriOffice of Technology Management & Industry RelationsNon-Confidential Abstract of InventionUM Disclosure No. 15UMC058Osteomodulatory Hydrogels for the Treatment of OsteoporosisThe present invention consists of injectable hydrogels for the treatment of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease associated with bone homeostasis dysregulation that consists of minimal new bone deposition and significant bone resorption leading to the formation of porous and weak bones characterized by low bone mass. The current gold standard treatment of osteoporosis involves the injection of a non-bioactive cement that has been shown to provide limited long-term benefits and may even play a role in the formation of compression fractures in the neighboring vertebrae. Preliminary data shows the ability of this technology to create ionic crosslinked hydrogels that promote bone growth and resorption without neighboring vertebrae fracturing. This technology, therefore, provides a new, better method of treatment.POTENTIAL AREAS OF APPLICATIONS:• Osteoporosis TreatmentMAIN ADVANTAGES OF INVENTION:• No Formation of Compression Fractures in Neighboring Vertebrae• Bone RegrowthSTATE OF DEVELOPMENT:• Patent pending LICENSING POTENTIAL:• University seeks licensee with the potential to commercializeINVENTOR(S):• Bret Ulery• Emily Cheng• Christina Goldstein• Mary JosseletCONTACT INFO: Office of Technology Management & Industry Relations Brett Maland, J.D.
