University of MissouriOffice of Technology Management & Industry RelationsNon-Confidential Abstract of InventionUM Disclosure No. 14UMC046Micro-Scale Calorimeter with Electrical Cell PositionerThis invention is designed to run DTA or DSC scans on individual biological cells for the purposes of characterizing phase change heat release or heat capacity, for a user prescribed temperature profile. A thermoelectric control system allows the temperature scan to be well controlled for the sample and reference sample holders. The sample holders are designed to be on the same order of magnitude in size as individual cells. The cells are positioned into the sample holders using a novel cell positioning method. Microfabrication techniques allow the entire structure to be fabricated on a single substrate. The 'lab on a chip' approach will allow biological researchers to better understand the thermal/fluid characteristics of individual cells, which will lead to improved cell-based therapies, diagnostics, and other biological processes.POTENTIAL AREAS OF APPLICATIONS:• Basic research laboratories that have an interest in individual cell osmotic behavior, such as those who are exploring cryopreservation protocols for individual or few cells, or nutrition researchers, or those who are interested in stem cell behavior, or reproductive biologists, or any other individuals who are studying cellular phenomena that are related to thermal events.MAIN ADVANTAGES OF INVENTION:• This device has the capability to take measurements on single or few cells, in either a cooling scan or a heating scan, or any arbitrary temperature profile that the user prescribes.STATE OF DEVELOPMENT:FURTHER R&D REQUIRED• Need to combine the micro-DSC with the cell positioning system and take preliminary calorimetry measurements using the designed device.LICENSING POTENTIAL:• University seeks licensee with the potential to commercializeINVENTOR(S):• Gary Solbrekken• Xu Han• James ArmesCONTACT INFO: Office of Technology Management & Industry Relations Wayne C.
