One-step method of synthesizing formic acid from carbon dioxide utilizing iron-based electrocatalyst
- 技術優勢
- Single step production of formic acid Use of electricity as energy, so renewable energy can be used Electrocatalyst used is made of an earth abundant material, ironReaction can be carried out in water and in a pH range of 5 - 13
- 技術應用
- Production of formic acid
- 詳細技術說明
- The worldwide capacity for producing formic acid was 720,000 tonnes/annum, roughly divided between Germany and China. Current methods for the production of formic acid are quite costly, requiring multiple steps, and are very heat dependent. Researchers at the University of California, Davis have developed a novel method of synthesizing formic acid. This novel method is a one-step, scalable reduction of CO2 to formic acid in an aqueous medium, by using one step, this method increases efficiency and percent yield, by decreasing side products developed. This novel method utilizes an iron-based catalyst. Additionally, this method can be carried out using electricity, which would allow manufacturers to decrease costs high heat costs by switching to cheaper electricity or renewable energy sources.
