Enables Herbicides and Pesticides to Work Faster and Longer

These two chemical compounds contain fluorinated substituents with myriad uses in agricultural products. These compounds could stimulate original research pursuits and lead to the development of more effective pesticides, herbicides, and plant growth regulators. These compounds are groundbreaking because they are the first pyrrole and thiophene derivatives to contain a pentafluorosulfanyl (SF5) group. One of the only new functional groups discovered in the last 100 years, the SF5 group has exciting possibilities. Research and commercial interest in fluorine chemistry overall has never been greater, and about 30 percent of available agrochemical products contain fluorine. The compounds could make herbicides and pesticides faster working and more effective over a longer period of time. They have the same potential in drug development.

Application

Two novel compounds for developing new agricultural products, including pesticides, herbicides and plant growth regulators

Advantages

  • Exhibits unique and attractive characteristics, allowing for the development of more effective compositions
  • Readily dissolves in fats, causing certain chemical products to work faster
  • Breaks down more slowly, allowing the production of herbicides and pesticides that last longer

Technology

University of Florida researchers have synthesized two pentafluorosulfanyl (SF5) heterocycles, a pyrrole and a thiophene derivative. Specifically, they discovered how to replace one of the existing groups in the pyrrole and thiophene molecules with a sulfur atom that is chemically bonded to and circled by five fluorine atoms. The SF5 group shares many desirable attributes with the trifluoromethyl (CF3) group - a commonly used fluorine-containing fragment - but has the advantage of even greater chemically stability, lipophilicity (ability to dissolve in fats) and electronegativity. These newly developed SF5-substituted analogues are novel chemical compounds, which could open up promising new lines of chemical drug research.
