Prevents Unnecessary Breast Biopsies, Reducing Healthcare Costs
This breast cancer detection tool will save lives and reduce healthcare costs. Breast cancer, the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths, kills approximately 40,000 women every year in the Unites States. Early detection can reduce the death toll. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) have helped with early detection, but the expense associated with these techniques prevents their widespread use in the fight against breast cancer. Other techniques of detection, such as self-examination and mammography, cannot easily distinguish between benign and malignant tumors. Researchers at the University of Florida have combined a microwave-induced thermalacoustic imaging system (TAI) and an ultra-wideband (UWB) imaging system to develop a safe, inexpensive diagnostic tool that can identify malignant tumors. The technology represents a significant advancement in breast cancer detection.Application
Detection of malignant tumors in human breast tissue
Advantages
- Distinguishes between benign and malignant tumors, reducing the healthcare costs associated with unnecessary breast biopsies
- Provides enhanced images via sophisticated signal processing technology, facilitating breast cancer diagnosis
- Features microwave imaging, offering a cost-effective alternative to MRI and PET procedures
- Frequency sweeping gathers more information about the human breast, allowing for recognition of tumors as small as 2mm
Technology
Scientific research has proven that malignant and benign tissues contain different dielectric properties. University of Florida researchers used this knowledge to develop an innovative microwave imaging system that produces clearer distinctions between malignant and benign tumors. The groundbreaking technology brings together the benefits of ultra-wideband (UWB) imaging and thermalacoustic imaging (TAI) to achieve a high level of contrast between tumors and healthy tissue. The TAI surveys the breast by radiating microwave impulses. It then gathers the thermalacoustic signals induced through the radiation to form images of the breast. Healthcare providers can use this enhanced imaging capability to save lives.
