A research team led at Qatar University has developed a unique device for separating water from oil for a variety of applications. Using electricity to bring together tiny water droplets, this electrocoalescer has a small, modular shape that can take on multiple configurations.
In addition to its small size and flexibility, this device's novel design achieves unprecedented dehydration efficiency. It can be used inline and downhole, separating water from hydrocarbons at the point of contact and thereby reducing water levels within extracted crude oil. It also has value for a variety of chemical engineering and industrial applications.
