Researchers at Qatar University, Canadian University ofDubai, and the University of Brescia have developed a self-powered,environmental air quality monitoring system. This device can monitor a widerange of parameters including, but not limited to, carbon monoxide (CO),nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen monoxide (NO), chlorine (Cl2), hydrogensulfide (H2S), Ammonia (NH3), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as well asenvironmental factors including humidity, temperature, and barometric pressure.This sensor system has a proprietary energy harvesting and management system,generating its own power from sources including radio frequency (RF), solarpower, thermoelectric, and piezoelectric energy.

About the size of aresidential smoke detector, the system acts as a node and communicates withother nodes wirelessly. This provides invaluable real-time air quality andenvironmental data from which trends can be established and predicted. The useof multiple sensor nodes effectively creates a self-powered, cloud-based,environmental monitoring platform that can be accessed or transmitted globally.In addition, an Android app with a variety of visualization features has beendeveloped to remotely manage the sensor nodes and to provide real-time air qualityinformation.
