D.Problem or Unmet Need:The growth in demand for Internet-protocol services, driven by the increasing number of broadband subscribers and total connected devices, has necessitated progressively more capacity along various network architectures: the network core, the access network and the aggregation network. Traditional network architectures have adopted a layered approach in an effort to facilitate rapid development via complexity abstraction. However, current networks have been nearing the limits of performance and energy for such traditional all electronic systems. Optical network architectures have shown promise in delivering higher bandwidths with higher energy efficiencies compared to electronic networks and offer improved performance with lower energy demand. However, the fundamental operational differences introduced by photonic devices coupled with the stringent performance and energy requirements of next-generation Internet-protocol services may necessitate the introduction of what are traditionally considered higher-level functionalities to the physical layer. This technology outlines the design of an intelligent cross-layer network node designed to support all-optically routed high-bandwidth messages. Such technology could eventually replace conventional fully electronic network switches along the access and aggregation layer of local-access and global-access networks. By utilizing a cross-layer control plane architecture and performance monitoring subsystems, the proposed network node can be managed and optimized dynamically. This dynamic optimization results in the addition of higher-level metrics such as link integrity, quality-of-service (QoS), and energy consumption, resulting from dynamic resource allocation and traffic engineering at the physical layer.
