- *Background
- In current medical strategies to removecancerous cells, surgeons remove what appears to be the affected tissue whileexcising and freezing any suspicious tissue left in the body. This suspicioustissue is tested post-surgery using dyes that are not approved for human use, such as hematoxylin, to stain different parts of the cells. If the subsequenttesting of the suspicious tissue comes back positive, the surgery did not removeall of the cancerous cells and the patient must return for additional removalsurgeries. This causes added stress and medical costs for the patient as thecancer treatment time period is extended. For diagnosing carcinomaspecifically, fine needle aspiration (FNA) can be utilized to quickly diagnosebreast cancer. However, many other types of cells can simulate cancerous cells, leading to false-positive results. A single cell detection technology would beneeded to differentiate between these similar cells.
