Multi-Step Purification of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes

詳細技術說明
Multi-Step Purification of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes  A new method to improve the purity and quality of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs)
*Abstract

Advantages

  • Results in high purity SWNTs (<1 wt. % metal) with low amorphous carbon residue
  • High purity allows for applications more sensitive to quality
  • Method is rapid and adaptable to continuous processing
  • Process is readily scalable for processing large quantities of SWNTS

Technology
Rice scientists have developed a method for purifying single wall nanotubes which yields high purity product with essentially no damage to the sidewall structure. The carbon yield of the method of this invention (~70%) is significantly higher than that of existing purification methods. Novel techniques allow for optimization of carbon yield and reaction time.

Potential Applications
The unique purity and quality of SWNTS purified according to the subject invention make them suitable for any number of applications with high-performance properties, and especially electronic and magnetic devices.

Patent Status
A utility patent application has been filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The Inventors
Dr. Robert Hauge has been a Distinguished Faculty Fellow at Rice University since 1992. He is a member of the Rice Quantum Institute and the Center for Nano-science and Engineering. He is named as an inventor in more than 40 inventions at Rice University.
