Researchers at Purdue University have developed a novel technique using a porous material such as filter paper to analyze heavy alkanes and other compounds that could not be previously analyzed by mass spectrometry. The method involves the use of a probe and porous material connected to a high voltage source, a device for generating a heated gas, and a mass analyzer; making it simple and inexpensive. The sample can be liquid or solid, and can be analyzed in an ambient environment.

*Background
The analysis and characterization of alkanes is imperative for the success of many industries like the petroleum industry with its use of hydrocarbon cracking products. Techniques such as chemical ionization, fundamental ion/molecule chemistry, and now high resolution ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (MS) have been used in the characterization process, yet these methods are incapable of characterizing highly complex heavy alkanes like asphaltenes and waxes.
