Plasma miR-21 Isolated Via a Modified Extraction Procedure and Normalized with a Specific Housekeeping miRNA as a Potential Diagnostic Marker of Colorectal Cancer (12042)

*Abstract

Previous studies of miRNAs in colorectal cancer (CRC) have provided inconsistent results due to the use of variable detection methods, different source materials, and thedifficulty in determining an appropriate reference (e.g., housekeeping) miRNA.

Dr. Susan Galandiuk and her team at the University of Louisville developed a reproducible, sensitive, and specific extraction procedure providing high miRNA yields in the plasma of CRC patients. With these improved yields, the investigators discovered that miR-21 differentiated CRC patients from controls with 90% specificity and sensitivity, with an ROC having an AUC of > 0.9 when normalized to a specific housekeeping miRNA.

Because miR-21 has been described in many solid cancers other than CRC, the investigators are continuing to work toward developing an miRNA panel sensitive to and solely for CRC.
