NANOGOLD PARTICLE REAGENT FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF SENSITIVITY OF FLUOROPHORE MEDIATED BIOSENSING APPLICATIONS (04027 & 04028)

*Abstract

Background:

Biomarkers used for diseasediagnosis are usually present in bio-samples with a wide variety of other biomolecules, some of which are structurally homologous to the biomarkers themselves.  In addition, the levels of biomarkers in asample are usually extremely low. Therefore, sensors to detect these biomarkers must be both verysensitive and specific.  This type ofdetection frequently uses fluorophores and, therefore, enhancement of thefluorescence sensitivity is very important to the improvement of thesensitivity of the biosensors.

Abstract:

Researchers in theChemical Engineering Department of the University of Louisvillehave found that when nanogold particles are set at a specific distance from thefluorophore in biosensors, the fluorescence-emitting capabilities of thesurface bound fluoroprobes are enhanced.  The researchers have determined the optimal ratio between the nanogoldparticles and fluorophore molecules and have developed a method that ensuresmaintenance of the optimal distance between the nanogold particles and thefluorophores allowing for increased fluorescence emission.  The researchers have also found that usingcertain solvents and solvent groups can enhance the fluorescence emission ofany fluorescent-light emitting detection fluorophore media or sensing detectionmethod by as much as 10 times.

Advantages:

  • Increases the specific sensitivity of thefluorophore-mediated biosensing systems by as much as 10 times.

Applications:

  • Nanogold particle reagent development, includingbiosensors
  • Sensitivity enhancement of any fluorescencerelated field
