TechnologyAn inherently flexible piezoelectric device has been fabricated by depositing conductive electrodes onto an elastomeric polymer film. Piezoelectric oligopeptides (with the sequence Cys-Ala-Ala-Ala-Ala-Ala-Ala) are self-assembled onto the electrodes by dipping in a water solution of the peptide for a short time. The device is formed by contacting one film, with another, that has a complementary oligopeptide sequence (Ala-Ala-Ala-Ala-Ala-Ala-Cys). This self assembles with the opposite surface current (e.g., ~50 nA) in response to applied forces (e.g., finger press, footstep, vibrations, flexing).Applications1. sensors (touch, force, impact, vibration)2. energy harvesting3. MEMS4. NEMS5. Vibrational damping6. ultrasound microphones7. sonar speakersAdvantages1. Inherently flexible2. Non-toxic3. Inexpensive4. Easily Patterned, Active layer is ~2-3nm thick5. Piezo material requires no electrical (pooling), intrinsically piezoelectric.Non provisional patent application filed
