BackgroundThe recent application of MRSI in human breast cancer has shown that choline is elevated in breast cancer, which may be used as an index to improve the diagnostic specificity of human breast cancer. Choline level, however, may also increase in lactating breast tissues. Thus, multiple metabolite markers may improve the accuracy of breast cancer diagnosis. TechnologyThis invention includes several modified Selective Multiple Quantum Coherence Transfer (Sel-MQC) sequences for simultaneous detection of Choline, Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA) and Lactate, and potentially other metabolites in a spin-echo and two different multiple quantum coherence transfer pathways. Choline level, however, may also increase in lactating breast tissues, thus, multiple metabolite markers may improve the accuracy of breast cancer diagnosis.Applications1) Detection of malignant changes in human breast or other tissues2) Improve the diagnostic specificity of breast cancer or other extracranial cancers in organs containing a high concentration of fat.3) Study biochemical changes and detect biomarkers of other human diseases.Advantages 1) Simultaneous detection of multiple metabolites and lipid molecules (e.g. Choline, Lactate, and PUFA) as specific tumor markers in tissues containing high fat content.Stage of DevelopmentSequences tested in vitro. Data available.
