WPANs operating in the 60 GHz millimeter-wave band connect personal computer devices within a few meters range and allow for intra-communication services for the devices. Tapered slot antennas (TSAs) are suited for such applications and can be used either as single antennas or as an element of an array. However, this type of antenna needs to be compact and matched to a microstrip feed line over the wide frequency bandwidth allocated for high speed data rate wireless communications in various countries. Current solutions to this problem increase the antenna size or cost, making it impractical for many applications.Our technology is a low-cost and efficient tapered slot antenna. We designed it to have sufficient frequency bandwidth for many applications while keeping low the cost and making compact the size. Our antenna is printed on a thin and flexible Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) substrate, which has a low permittivity and low loss tangent, but is not limited to this substrate. It is matched to the microstrip feed line by a never been used before compact and wideband collinear-stub microstrip-to-slot transition. The transition is located between the microstrip and the tapered slot and has low insertion loss. For rigidity and protection, the antenna features a metallic pedestal. It also features a metallic reflector, which renders the antenna gain higher.
