The rapid growth of telecommunication gives rise to an ever-increasing demand for patch antennas with wide impedance bandwidth. The patch antenna invented by CityU is equipped with a pair of folded feed plates that serve as a wideband impedance matching device. It can achieve an impedance bandwidth of up to 74 percent at a standing wave ratio of less than two. Differential signals are fed by the folded feed plates to the antenna plate; such an arrangement leads to the suppression of unwanted radiation from the feeding plates, and hence low cross-polarization levels within the operating band can be achieved. The patch antenna can be implemented in a circularly-polarized patch antenna by cutting two corners off the antenna plate to make a truncated path. The stacked antenna is widely used in GPS applications.
