A Liquid Crystal Alignment Layer and Methods of Making Thereof液晶盒內形成高預傾角之辦法

總結: The alignment behavior of the liquid crystal layer of a liquid crystal display (LCD) determines most of its optical properties. The alignment direction and pretilt angles are determined by the alignment layers in contact with the liquid crystal layer itself and cannot be varied.

Some traditional ways to obtain high pretilt angles controllably are by oblique evaporation of SiOx in a vacuum or the use of molecular Langmuir-Bloggett films. These methods are, however, impractical for mass production.

This invention provides a novel method of obtaining controllable pretilt angles by rubbing a specially prepared alignment layer. This method can achieve any predetermined pretilt angle ranging from 10˚-80˚. It is also commensurate with traditional mass production technology which is based on mechanical rubbing. Basically, nano- and micro-domains are formed in the alignment layer. Such nano- and micro-domains contain different alignment properties. The interaction of the domains gives large pretilt angles in a controllable manner. This method can be used in a variety of applications, including but not limited to bistable display and fast display such as LCD TV.
