Method and Apparatus for Recognizing Landmark Buildings in an Image, and Localizing the Recognized Landmark Buildings on a Map with related Information
Our invention is related to a landmark building recognition system which recognizes landmark buildings in an image and then localizes the recognized buildings on a map with related information. The system consists of one database to store the models of a set of landmark buildings which are learned from a set of training images captured for each building, and another database to store the related information of each landmark building. The model of each landmark building is represented as a set of features and the geometric relationship between them by clustering the salient features extracted from a set of training images of the landmark building. The model learning module of the system captures the training images for each landmark building, and extract the local features from each training image, then creates descriptions for each feature to describe the semantic content and geometric information of the building. Then each landmark building model is represented as the set of features and the geometric relationship between them, by clustering the extracted features from the set of training images of the landmark building. Each feature is stored in the database as a feature record with building ID and feature ID. The administration module of the landmark building recognition system has the functionalities of accessing, adding, deleting, and editing the landmark building models of the database to update the buildings’ model for recognition. The building recognition module captures the images of each landmark building, and extracts the features from these images, then creates the descriptions for each feature to describe its semantic content and geometric information, Then these features are matched to the features stored in the database to calculate the similarity distance between them. According to the matching score, the building in the input image is recognized, and the location and related information of the building are retrieved from the database. The recognized building is then marked on a map to indicate its location, and the related information of this building is also presented to users through text, linked web pages or multimedia content.
