Researchers at the University of South Florida have developed a new group of small molecule agents capable of inhibiting the growth and function of tumor cells, thereby inducing programmed cell death (apoptosis). Our investigators have developed a group of peptidomimetic inhibitors, which are small molecule agents able to specifically target tumor cells and inhibit signaltransducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3), a pro-survival protein constantly active in a wide variety of tumor cells. In vitro data show that growth and function ofhuman breast and lung cancer cells exposed to one of these peptidomimetic inhibitors are inhibited and programmed cell death is induced, but normal cells are not affected by the treatment.Further development of these agents for anticancer therapy may provide a new means of treating a wide variety of cancers without the side-effects seen with chemotherapy.
